The Estate

The Robert Stanford Estate is situated on the southern slopes of the Kleinrivier Mountains, overlooking the peaceful village of Stanford. This historic estate (anno 1855) is steeped in Overberg history. The estate was owned by the enterprising Sir Robert Stanford which became the food basket of the area. He shipped fresh produce to Cape Town in his own cutter, mooring it in the cove which still bears his name.

Wine has been produced here since the 1890s and when the Huguenot Isak du Toit bought the farm in 1909 he added more vineyards and a winery. The vineyards on the granite slopes overlooking the Kleinrivier Valley are ideal for producing wines which are an expression of the unique cool climate terroir.

An environmentally friendly approach to farming includes a Biodiversity and Wine Initiative championship award and the Kleinrivier Conservancy which ensures that the more than 200 Fynbos species, abundant wildlife and vineyards can thrive together in total harmony.

Sir Robert Stanford and Cutters Cove are the two labels produced by the farm. Hospitality and tradition rule at Robert Stanford Estate. Visitors can explore the wine shop, have a delicious meal at country restaurant Madré’s kitchen as well as visit the Stookhuis, a distillery  or the Malcolm Bowling art studio.

The Sir Robert Stanford selections of wines can be paired with numerous delicious meals found on the Madre's Kitchen menu. For example oven baked camembert wrapped in wine leaves complimented by the Sir Robert Stanford Hansom 2009 is a beautiful combination.
